Nogata

(from Arabic naqd, “full-valued, choice coin”), a unit in the monetary system of ancient Rus’. It originated in the tenth century to differentiate between the better and poorer qualities of the dirhamthen in circulation. According to the short version of the Russkaia pravda in the 11th century, the nogata represented one-twentieth of a grivna and 1.25 kuny; in the expanded version of the Russkaia pravda in the 12th century, the nogata equaled one-twentieth of a grivna and 2.5 kuny. The term nogata continued in use as a monetary denomination until the end of the 15th century.
