Moorer, Thomas H. (Hinman)

(1912– ) naval officer; born in Mount Willing, Ala. During World War II he narrowly escaped death twice—his airplane was shot down and the ship that rescued him was torpedoed (1942). He was commander of the Atlantic Fleet (1965–67), chief of naval operations (1967–70), and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1970–74) before he retired in 1974.
