Novaia Kakhovka

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction in Kherson Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Port on the left bank of the Dnieper River, 6 km from the Kakhovka railroad station on the Snigirevka-Fedorovka line. Population, 45,000 (1974).

Novaia Kakhovka produces electrical machinery, reinforced-concrete structural members, and metal structures for hydraulic engineering projects. Local food-processing industries include a meat-packing plant and a bread-baking plant. Other products are furniture and wine, the latter produced by the Tavriia Wine Sovkhoz.

The general engineering department of the Odessa Civil Engineering Institute is located in Novaia Kakhovka, as are tech-nicums that train specialists in electrical engineering, drainage and irrigation, and the mechanization and electrification of agriculture. The city was founded in 1952 in connection with the construction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.
