Ludwigskanal

 

a navigable canal in the south of the Federal Republic of Germany, in the Land of Bavaria. It connects the Main River with the Altmühl (a tributary of the Danube) and is part of the waterway that connects the basins of the Rhine and Danube. Built between 1836 and 1845, the Ludwigskanal is 172 km long and has many locks. Its traffic capacity is small. The cities of Nuremberg, Fiirth, Erlangen, and Bamberg are situated on the Ludwigskanal.
