a city and port in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), located in the Land of Rheinland-Pfalz. Population, 176,300 (1971).

Ludwigshafen and the city of Mannheim, which are connected by a bridge, form an industrial conurbation. Ludwigshafen is an important transportation junction, its port having a freight turnover of 12.7 million tons in 1970. It is also one of the chief centers of the country’s chemical industry: the chemical combine Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik AG and a petrochemical combine located there are among the largest enterprises of the country. Ludwigshafen supplies semifinished goods to a great many synthetic fiber enterprises in the FRG as well as in France. The city also has machine building and metallurgy, specializing mainly in the production of chemical equipment and accessories, as well as a glass industry and a food and condiments industry.
