Benedek, Ludwig August

Born July 14, 1804, in Sopron; died Apr. 27, 1881, in Graz. Austrian general.

In 1846, Benedek directed the suppression of the Kraków uprising; he took part in the Austro-Italian War of 1848–49 and the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution in 1849. During the Austro-Italo-French War of 1859, Benedek commanded a corps. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he was made commander in chief of the Northern (Bohemian) Army, which suffered defeat at Sadowa. After 1866, Benedek lived in retirement.
