Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine
Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine
(full name, V. I. Lenin Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine), one of the largest ferrous-metallurgy enterprises in the USSR, located in the city of Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Oblast.
Construction of the V. I. Lenin Kuznetsk Metallurgical Combine started, along with that of the city of Novokuznetsk itself, in 1929. The first blast furnace, open hearth furnaces, blooming mill, and rail shops went into operation in 1932. The combine is a complex of diverse but technologically related types of production. The 16 mining enterprises of the combine extract iron ore, limestone, dolomite, quartzes, refractory clays, molding sands, and other types of raw materials. Most of the iron ore undergoes preliminary concentration and sintering. The combine produces coke, coke by-products, pig iron, steel, sectional and sheet-rolled products, railroad rails and fastenings, refractory articles, and enameled and galvanized wares. The combine is constantly being equipped with up-to-date equipment, and many processes have been automated. The combine operates on local iron ore (previously the ore was shipped from the Urals).
The combine supplies non-ore metallurgical raw materials from its own mining enterprises to the Western Siberian Metallurgical Plant, the Kuznetsk Ferrous Alloys Plant, and other enterprises and construction projects of the Kuznetsk Basin. The combine has been awarded the Order of Lenin (1943), the Order of Kutuzov First Class (1945), the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1945), and the Order of the October Revolution (1971).
