NHS reforms

A generic term for the organisational changes to the NHS proposed in the Health and Social Care Bill 2011, by the UK Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley. The proposed reforms include eliminating primary care trusts (PCTs) and strategic health authorities (SHAs) and passing commissioning of healthcare services to GP consortia which, under the proposals, would control 60% of the NHS budget, allowing the consortia to buy care from “any willing provider”, including the NHS, private companies and voluntary groups.
