The sequence of days, usually 3 to 7 but averaging 4 days, during each menstrual cycle when the lining of the womb (the endometrium), together with a quantity of blood, is being shed via the cervix and the vagina. The volume lost varies between 50 and 150 ml. Menstrual blood is dark in colour and does not clot.
