minimum leak technique min·i·mum leak tech·nique (MLT) (min'i-mŭm lēk tek-nēk') 1. After full inflation of the occluding cuff of an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, the withdrawal of a small volume of air or saline solution so that a slight leak is heard at the end of (positive pressure) inspiration, to avoid tracheal trauma resulting from overinflation. 2. In respiratory therapy, a form of mechanical ventilation often used in association with tracheotomy. An invasive procedure, it carries a substantial risk of patients' aspirating of fluids. |
