Mark of Origin
Mark of Origin
a designation placed on a product or its wrapping by the manufacturer. Since 1936, Soviet law has provided that the merchandise of all manufacturing enterprises must be marked. The mark of origin must include the complete or abbreviated name and the location of the manufacturing enterprise, the name of the administrative body to which the enterprise is subordinated (a ministry, a cooperative center, or whatever), the grade of the merchandise, and the number of the appropriate All-Union State Standard. The mark of origin is not registered and is used irrespective of the trademark. The mark of origin serves to increase the enterprise’s responsibility for the quality of its product. If the mark of origin is absent or there is a wrong marking, the enterprise is liable and the management is subject to disciplinary or criminal responsibility.
