Kurath, Gertrude Prokosch

Kurath, Gertrude Prokosch

(1903–92) musicologist; born in Chicago. She danced and taught professionally as "Tula" (1922–46) before turning to the study of Indian dance. She did extensive fieldwork and published writings on Iroquois, Pueblo, Six Nations, and Great Lakes Indian dance; she also contributed to dance theory and notation. She founded the Dance Research Center, Ann Arbor, Mich. (1962).
