Markevich, Aleksandr Prokof’evich
Born Mar. 6 (19), 1905, in the village of Ploskoe, now Tarashcha Raion, Kiev Oblast. Soviet zoologist; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1957; corresponding member, 1948); Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1951.
In 1930, Markevich graduated from the University of Kiev; he became a professor there in 1934. From 1935 to 1970 he worked at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, serving as director from 1948 to 1950; since 1970 he has worked at the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He was academician-secretary of the division of general biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1971-72. His principal works are on the zoology of invertebrates, general problems of parasitology, and parasites of commercial and agricultural animals and their control, as well as the phylogeny of animals, the history of zoological research, and philosophical problems of biology. He was the organizer and permanent chairman (from 1945) of the Ukrainian Parasitology Society. He was awarded two orders and various medals.
