Arnould, Charles Auguste Emile Arthur

 

Born Apr. 17, 1833, in Dieuze, Department of Meurthe; died 1895, in Paris. French political figure, publicist, and writer.

In the 1860’s, Arnould worked on a number of democratic newspapers. He was a member of the Paris Commune of 1871 and of its commissions on foreign relations, supplies, and education. Within the Commune, Arnould adhered to the minority, the core of which was composed of the Prudhonists. When the Commune was suppressed, Arnould emigrated to Switzerland; he was sentenced in absentia to exile in New Caledonia by a French court. Arnould returned to France and took up literary activity after the amnesty of 1880.
