Kunin, Vladimir Nikolaevich
Born Aug. 15, 1906, in Geneva. Soviet hydrogeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968) and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1951). Member of the CPSU since 1964.
After graduating from Leningrad University in 1930, Kunin studied the underground waters of the Karakum Desert and Kopetdag. Between 1937 and 1968 he worked at the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1968 he has headed the laboratory of the Institute of Water Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Kunin’s principal works deal with natural waters under arid conditions and the methods of using and replenishing them. He was one of the founders of the Institute of Deserts of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR. Kunin has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
