The use of the lierne in Gothic architecture was one of the first examples of the division of a construction into a strong framework and a light filler. With the introduction of the lierne, the nature of masonry was simplified, the weight was decreased, and the strength of cross vaultings was increased. In French Gothic the herne was called a rib. In another sense the lierne is a sectioned band that divides the facade of a building. |
