Kuma Reservoir

 

a reservoir in the northern part of the Karelian ASSR, on the Kuma River (basin of the Kovda River). Area, 1,910 sq km; volume, 13.3 cu km; average depth, 7 m. The reservoir was formed by the dam of the Kuma Hydroelectric Power Plant (1966), which flooded the Kuma River valley and raised the level of Lakes Topozero, Piaozero, and Kundozero.

The Kuma Reservoir is used for long-term regulation of dis-charge. Its level varies within a range of 4.5 m. It freezes in November or early December and opens up in May or early June. The reservoir is used to produce electric power, as well as for timber flotation and water supply. Fishes inhabiting the reservoir include cisco, whitefish, sea trout, grayling, pike, and smelt. Commercial fishing is well developed.
