On N coast of California; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Cabo (Cape) Mendocino, which early records indicate was named for Antonio de Mendoza (c. 1485-1552), viceroy of New Spain in 1542, or Lorenzo Suarez de Mendoza, viceroy of New Spain (1580-83). Name merely means someone from Mendoza
