Mendel Gregor Johann . 1822--84, Austrian monk and botanist; founder of the science of genetics. He developed his theory of organic inheritance from his experiments on the hybridization of green peas. His findings were published (1865) but remained unrecognized until 1900 Mendel’ a river in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR; left tributary of the Kef River (Ob’ basin). Length, 366 km; basin area, 3,800 sq km. The Mendel’ rises on the plateau of the Ob’-Enisei water-shed and flows through the marshes of the Western Siberian Plain. It is fed by mixed sources, predominantly by snow. High water occurs from May to August. Mendel
