Marka (Merca) a city in southern Somalia, on the Indian Ocean; administrative center of the district of Benadir. Population, 70,000 (1969). Foreign trade port (goods turnover, approximately 60,000 tons). Bananas grown on plantations near Genale and Vittorio d’Africa are exported from Marka. The city has a cotton-ginning plant.
