Ksenofont Kocheshkov
Kocheshkov, Ksenofont Aleksandrovich
Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 12), 1894, in Moscow. Soviet organic chemist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1946). Student of N. D. Zelinskii.
Kocheshkov graduated from Moscow University in 1922. He subsequently began working at the university, becoming a professor in 1935. In 1946 he became director of the organo-metallic laboratory at the L. la. Karpov Physicochemical Institute.
The principal studies of Kocheshkov and his students have been devoted to the chemistry of organometallic compounds. He discovered a series of new methods of synthesizing organic com-pounds of lead, tin, silicon, alkali metals, zinc, antimony, bismuth, indium, gallium, and calcium. He also developed new methods of synthesizing organic compounds (amines and others) using organometallic compounds. Kocheshkov is one of the authors and editors of the series Synthetic Methods for Organo-metallic Compounds and Methods of Heteroorganic Chemistry. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1948 and 1967), he has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and various medals.
