Mingechaur Reservoir

a reservoir formed by the dam of the Mingechaur Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Kura River in the Azerbaijan SSR. The filling of the reservoir began in 1953 and was completed in 1959. Area, 605 sq km; volume, 16.1 cu km; length, 70 km; greatest width, 18 km; average depth, 27 m; greatest depth, 75 m. The water level in the Mingechaur Reservoir fluctuates within a range of 5.2 m; the reservoir provides long-term regulation of drainage.

The Mingechaur Reservoir was created in the interests of the development of power engineering, agriculture, and water transportation; it was also designed to eliminate flooding in the lower course of the Kura River. The Upper Karabakh Canal (172 km) and the Upper Shirvan Canal (123 km) originate in the reservoir.
