Kruger National Park

a park in Africa, in the Republic of South Africa. Located in the eastern Transvaal along the border with Mozambique, between the Crocodile and Limpopo rivers. From north to south it is 340 km long. It was created in 1898 as a natural preserve by the president of the Transvaal, P. Kruger. It has been a national park since 1926; its area is over 1.8 million hectares (1971). The Olifants and Sabi rivers divide it into three parts: the northern, central (the highest concentration of wild animals in the world), and southern. The principal type of vegetation is park savanna. The park contains the characteristic fauna of southeastern Africa, including the elephant, hippopotamus, white rhinoceros, giraffe, lion, leopard, crocodile, and 17 species of antelope. There are more than 400 species of birds.
