It is the center of an agricultural region with extensive vineyards. There are some light industries. A Roman settlement, it reached its greatest importance as the capital of the kings of the Suebi (5th–6th cent.). It has a fine 12th-century bridge and a Gothic cathedral, frequently restored. There are hot sulfur springs, known since Roman times. |
