Monte Cristo

(mŏn'tē krĭs`tō, Ital. môn`tā krē`stō), unpopulated, rocky island, 6 sq mi (15.5 sq km), belonging to Italy, in the Tyrrhenian Sea between Corsica and the Italian coast. It owes its fame to the novel by Alexandre Dumas père, The Count of Monte Cristo.
