memeA unit of culture transmitted from individual to individual, especially by some form of imitation. In common usage, the term refers to any individual piece of online content, usually an image paired with text, that circulates widely and spawns many imitations and variations. These cat memes are getting out of control.plus ça change (plus c'est la même chose)From French, meaning "the more things change, the more they remain the same." In English, the phrase is used in reference to situations or problems that remain the same, even when people or things involved in them are different. We move into a fancy new office, and still, the server crashes all the time. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Plus ça change, eh? Even with the so-called champion of the working man in office, it's still the wealthy elite getting all the tax breaks.See also: ca, change, la, meme, plusmeme
meme (philosophy)/meem/ [By analogy with "gene"] Richard Dawkins'sterm for an idea considered as a replicator, especially withthe connotation that memes parasitise people into propagatingthem much as viruses do.
Memes can be considered the unit of cultural evolution. Ideascan evolve in a way analogous to biological evolution. Someideas survive better than others; ideas can mutate through, for example, misunderstandings; and two ideas can recombine toproduce a new idea involving elements of each parent idea.
The term is used especially in the phrase "meme complex"denoting a group of mutually supporting memes that form anorganised belief system, such as a religion. However, "meme"is often misused to mean "meme complex".
Use of the term connotes acceptance of the idea that in humans(and presumably other tool- and language-using sophonts)cultural evolution by selection of adaptive ideas has becomemore important than biological evolution by selection ofhereditary traits. Hackers find this idea congenial fortolerably obvious reasons.

Coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene," memes and memetics are the cultural counterpart to the biological study of genes and genetics. Using the evolution analogy, Dawkins observed that human cultures evolve via "contagious" communications in a manner similar to the gene pool of populations over time. See Internet meme.meme
