Manufactures include ships, textiles, metal and wood products, canned fish, and beer. The city was founded (1641) by Christian IV and became an episcopal see in 1682. Its Christiansholm Fortress (1662–72) now houses a restaurant. The Varodden Bridge (1956), one of the largest suspension bridges in N Europe, spans the nearby Randesund.Kristiansanda city and port in Norway, situated on an island in the mouth of the Otra River, on the northern shore of the Skagerrak. Administrative center of the fylke (county) of Vest-Agder. Population, 57,000 (1971). A railroad ferry links Kristiansand with Hirtshals in Denmark. The chief economic activities are the export of lumber and products of the pulp-and-paper industry, machine building, especially shipbuilding, nonferrous metallurgy (casting of nickel, copper, and aluminum), and the woodworking, textile, and fish-canning industries.
