Narcyza Zmichowska

Żmichowska, Narcyza

Born Mar. 4, 1819, in Warsaw; died there Dec. 25, 1876. Polish writer. Daughter of an impoverished nobleman.

żmichowska participated in the underground patriotic movement. In 1845 she published a collection of poems entitled Gabriella’s Free Moments. .żmichowska’s best novella, The Pagan Woman (1846), was a critique of the dissoluteness and cosmopolitanism of the aristocracy and its grandiose daydreams. In her prose, notably the novella A Book of Reminiscences (1847-48) and the novel The White Rose (1848), żmichowska combines realistic tendencies with romantic imagery and fantasy and strives for profound psychological portrayal.
