Krestovskii V.

 

(pseudonym of Nadezhda Dmitrievna Khvoshchinskaia; married name, Zaionchkovskaia). Born May 20 (June 1), 1824, in Pronsk District, Riazan’ Province; died June 8 (20), 1889, in St. Petersburg. Russian writer.

In the 1840’s, Krestovskii published verses under the name of Khvoshchinskaia that displayed civic tendencies. She became famous for her novels and stories written in the 1850’s through 1880’s, including Anna Mikhailovna (1850), A Village Story (1885), Family Affair (1864), The First Struggle (1869), The Big Dipper (1870–71), and The Teacher (1880). Her work showed the influence of the democratic writers associated with N. G. Chernyshevskii’s circle.
