Krasnyi Kut Plant-Breeding Station

 

a plant-breeding station affiliated with the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture of the Southeast; it is in Krasnyi Kut Raion, Saratov Oblast. Established in 1911 on the basis of an experimental field that had been in existence since 1909, it was reorganized into a state plant-breeding station in 1937.

In 1972 the institute had the following departments: plant breeding and seed production, cereal crops and bean crops, and farming and fodder production. It also has an agrochemical laboratory. The station is concerned with plant breeding, seed production, and the technology of raising spring wheat, barley, chick-peas, and fodder grasses. It works out systems of crop rotation, breeds and evaluates fodder crops, and designs shelter-belts. The varieties bred by the station that have been regionalized include Melianopus 26, Melianopus 69, Melianopus 1932, and Eritrospermum 841 (spring wheat); Nutans 187 and Pallidum 43 (barley); lubileinyi and Krasnokutskii 195 (chick-pea); Krasnokutskaia 4009 and Krasnokutskaia 3125 (alfalfa); and Krasnokutskii uzkokolosyi 305 and Krasnokutskii shirokokolosyi 4 (couch grass).
