Krasnoiarovskaia Sopka
Krasnoiarovskaia Sopka
the remains of a fortress of the 11th-13th centuries located south of the city of Ussuriisk, Primor’e Krai. The fortress had a complex system of defenses, including inner and outer ramparts, traverses, and forts. Excavations (begun in 1953) have revealed public buildings with tiled roofs on wooden supports, and pisé dwellings with heated brick beds (k’ang). Architectural decorations, ornamented roof tiles, iron hardware (locks, bolts, nails, hooks), and spherical ceremonial vessels were found in the public buildings. Domestic pottery, weapons made of iron, and Chinese coins were discovered in the dwellings. The fortress was an important administrative and military center of the Jurchen state of Chin in what is now Primor’e Krai.
