Monroe, Earl (“the Pearl”)

(1944– ) basketball player; born in Philadelphia, Pa. After playing at Winston-Salem State University (1964–67), he played as a guard for the Baltimore Bullets and then for the New York Knicks (1971–80), leading the team to a National Basketball Association championship in 1973.
