Name Origin: Two main theories: 1) From the old Spanish name of San Rafael Bay, Bahia de Nuestra Senora del Rosario la Marinera, 'Bay of Our Lady of the Rosary, Mariner's Patron'; this name was given in 1775 by the surveyor Ayala. 2) For the name of a mythical Indian leader, transliterated to Marin; also applied to the islands in San Rafael Bay.
