Krasnaia Peshchera

Krasnaia Peshchera

a cave system in the Crimean Mountains, southeast of the city of Simferopol’. It is the largest limestone karst cave in the USSR and the fifth longest cave (if gypsum caves are included). The length of explored passages and chambers totals 13.1 km, and the cave’s total volume is 200,000 cu m. The system has six stories: on the bottom story there is an underground river (the Krasnaia Peshchera) with siphons, which made it difficult to explore the cave; there are also under-ground lakes. The galleries and chambers of Krasnaia Peshchera contain many limestone stalactite and stalagmite formations.
