Mindanao Trench

Mindanao Trench

(also Philippine Trench), a submarine depression in the Pacific Ocean, at the base of the eastern slopes of the mountains whose tops form the Philippine Islands. The Mindanao Trench extends 1,330 km from southern Luzon to Halmahera. The maximum depth is 10,265 m. The trench is asymmetric; the slope on the side of the island arc is steeper than that on the side of the ocean bed. The bottom is flat and measures approximately 1 km in width.
