Established: 1980.
Location:270 miles west of Fairbanks, in the central Yukon Valley.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, historical features.
Activities:Camping, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Caribou from the migratory western arctic herd, which numbers more than 450,000, often move into the northernmost reaches of the refuge in winter. the refuge also supports a resident, non-migratory caribou population, the Galena Mountain herd, which numbers about 300.
Habitats: Nearly 4 million acres of wetlands, boreal forest, and tundra.
Access: Unlimited except by weather; access is by boat, aircraft, or snowmobile.
Wild life: Raptors including the bald eagle. Also provides habitat for owl, trumpeter swan, white-fronted goose, American wigeon, mallard, northern pintail, northern shoveler, lynx, black and grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and caribou.
