Monospore

monospore

[′män·ə‚spȯr] (botany) A simple or undivided nonmotile asexual spore; produced by the diploid generation of some algae.

Monospore

the cell from which a new plant develops in red algae that do not have alternation of generations. It develops in the monosporangium, from which it emerges into the water in the form of a bare protoplast that has a haploid nucleus, as do all cells of an algal thallus. Monospores are characteristic of Bangiophyceae and some Florideae.
