Kovačić, Ante
Born June 6, 1854, in Marija Gorica; died Dec. 10, 1889, in Stenevec. Croatian writer; from a poor peasant family. In 1875 he began publishing romantic and patriotic ballads and songs. In verse and prose satires he exposed those who betrayed the national interests. In his novellas and novels, Kovacic achieved a broad realistic depiction of the life of Croatian society. His best works are the novels The Lawyer (1882) and At the Registry (1888).
