(Makari, Mantage), a people in Cameroon and the Republic of Chad, inhabiting the region to the south of Lake Chad and the banks of the Logone and Chari rivers.
The Kotoko population totals more than 120,000 (1970, estimate). In the northern areas of their territory the Kotoko live together with Arabs (the Shuwa), and in the eastern areas they live with the Kanuri. The Kotoko are closely related to the Buduma (Yedina)—fishermen who live on the islands of Lake Chad. The languages of the Kotoko are related to the Chadic languages. Their religion is Islam. The chief occupations are fishing, farming, and livestock raising.
