Korzukhin, Alekseiivanovich

Born Mar. 11 (23), 1835, in Uktusskii Zavod, present-day Sverdlovsk; died Oct. 18 (30), 1894, in St. Petersburg. Russian genre painter. Son of a serf.

Korzukhin studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts between 1858 and 1863. He participated in the Revolt of the Fourteen and in 1863 left the academy to join the Artists’ Artel. In 1868, Korzukhin became an academician at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and the founder and member of the Society of Wandering Art Exhibits (the peredvizhniki), though he himself did not participate in the exhibits. His art is characterized by social denunciation and lively spontaneity, in the genre scenes. His paintings Return From the Village Fair (1868), Before Confession (1877), and In the Monastery Inn (1882) are all in the Tret’iakov Gallery; Portrait of M. I. Peskov (1863), Enemies of Birds (1887), and The Last Crust (1890) hang in the Russian Museum in Leningrad.
