Puzyrevskii, Nestor Platonovich

Born Aug. 18 (30), 1861, in St. Petersburg; died Aug. 26, 1934, in Leningrad. Soviet hydraulic engineer.

Puzyrevskii graduated from the St. Petersburg Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1885 and subsequently worked as an exploration engineer. He completed a hydrographic survey and a description of several of Russia’s rivers, including the Don, Dnestr, Severskii Donets, Oka, and Volkhov. He designed projects for construction or improvement of waterways and river connections, such as the Mologa-Msta, White Sea-Baltic Sea, Moscow-Nizhnii Novgorod, and Volga-Don canals. He began teaching at the St. Petersburg Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1904 and became a professor in 1914. From 1930 he was a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Water Transport. His main works deal with hydraulic engineering problems of waterways, soil mechanics, mechanics of bases and foundations, and the economics of water transportation. Puzyrevskii developed an original design for a sectional navigation dam, as well as new types of lightweight lock gates, ship hoists, and fish ladders.
