Koriak Sopka

an active volcano on Kamchatka, 35 km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, rising to an altitude of 3,456 m. The top of the regular, ribbed cone is cut off at a slanting angle. The volcano is composed of andesite and basalt slag, ash, and lava flows, some of which have filled valleys hollowed out by ancient glaciers. Eruptions occurred in 1895-96 and again in 1956-57. Its slopes are covered with stands of Erman’s birch and elfin wood.
