bipolar coordinate system bipolar coordinate system[¦bī‚pō·lər kō′ȯrd·ən·ət ‚sis·təm] (mathematics) A two-dimensional coordinate system defined by the family of circles that pass through two common points, and the family of circles that cut the circles of the first family at right angles. A three-dimensional coordinate system in which two of the coordinates depend on the x and y coordinates in the same manner as in a two-dimensional bipolar coordinate system and are independent of the z coordinate, while the third coordinate is proportional to the z coordinate. |
