Lewis, Dixon Hall

(1802–48) U.S. representative/senator; born in Dinwiddie County, Va. He practiced law in Alabama and as member of the house of representatives (Dem., Ala.; 1829–44) he championed states' rights. In the senate (1844–48) he opposed the United States Bank. A man of extraordinary weight, he required special arrangements to travel and to sit in assemblies.
