a summer apple of Canadian origin; an open-pollinated seedling of the Mclntosh variety. The medium-sized fruits (on young trees, weighing up to 200 g) are rounded, slightly ridged, and yellowish; the white pulp is juicy, tender, spicy, aromatic, and tart. The apples ripen in late August and can be stored until October. The apples can be eaten fresh. The trees bear fruit early, four or five years after planting. A tree that is nine to 11 years old produces 30 kg of fruit. Melba apples are grown in the RSFSR, Ukrainian SSR, Kazakh SSR, Lithuanian SSR, Turkmen SSR, Latvian SSR, and Estonian SSR.
