a city in southeastern Turkey; center of Mardin Vilayet; population, 33,600 (1970). Mardin has a railroad station. It is a transit point on the route from eastern Turkey to Iraq. It has food and cement industries and production of hand-woven fabric. Mardin is the center of a large agricultural region (grains, cotton, opium poppies, sheep, and Angora goats).
