Millions Knives

Millions Knives

(pop culture)Even though he was not introduced until relatively late in the series, Millions Knives is the primary villain of Yasuhirow Nightow's manga Trigun (1995) and its sequel, Trigun Maximum (1998–present). Knives is the twin brother of Trigun's hero, Vash. Though his brother is a pacifist, Knives craves violence and despises humans. Both are genetically engineered beings that appear to be twenty years of age, but are in fact well over one hundred years old. Knives has abilities well above those of a normal human, including use of a powerful energy weapon called the “Angel Arm.” Knives and Vash were “born” during Project SEEDS, a mission involving a fleet of starships carrying colonists fleeing a dying Earth. A woman named Rem Savarem cared for both of them, but while Vash adopted Rem's love for life and pacifism, Knives grew to hate humans and sabotaged the fleet to crash on the targeted planet. Only Rem's sacrificial intervention saved much of the fleet, but not before she ejected Knives and Vash in an escape pod. Years later, Vash encountered Knives, who had murdered any survivors (and their descendants) who had ties to Rem. Knives activated Vash's Angel Arm, but Vash fired, seemingly destroying Knives. One hundred and thirty years after their birth, Knives pulled Vash into a second confrontation. Using his group of enforcers, the Gung-ho Guns, Knives (who was restoring his damaged body to full strength) set out to inflict pain and suffering on Vash, no matter how many innocents died in the process. In the Trigun anime, which first ran on Cartoon Network in 2003 (and has been released in both VHS and DVD formats in the United States), Vash and Knives' final confrontation occurred in the last episode. Knives was defeated after a fierce firefight, but Vash, true to his beliefs, did not kill his brother.
