Kopaonik

Kopaonik

a mountain range in eastern Yugoslavia, in Serbia. Length, about 75 km from north to south; width, up to 40 km; elevation, up to 2,017 m (Pan£icev Vrh). The range is composed primarily of crystalline schists, granites, and serpentinites. The western slopes drop abruptly to the Ibar River; the eastern slopes are broken up into individual spurs by the valleys of the Rasina, Toplica, and Lab rivers and their tributaries. On the lower slopes are oak and beech forests; higher are pine and fir forests. Above 1,600 m there are meadows, which are used as summer pastures. Deposits of lead and zinc (at Trepda) and iron ores (in the Ibar River valley) have been found in the Kopaonik Range.
