Marchlewski, Leon Paweł

Born Dec. 15 (27), 1869, in Wloclawek; died Jan. 16, 1946, in Krakow. Polish chemist. Brother of J. Marchlewski.

Marchlewski’s major works deal with anthraquinone and naphthoquinone dyes, primarily those of natural origin. Working with M. Nencki from 1897 to 1901, Marchlewski established the chemical affinity between hemoglobin and chlorophyll. He studied the chemistry of sugars and the absorption spectra of some organic compounds within the ultraviolet range.
