On W central border of CA and NV; organized Apr 24, 1861 from Calaveras and Fresno counties. Name Origin: For Mono Lake; the lake's name is probably a Spanish-influenced shortened form of a Shoshonean tribal name, monache or monachi 'fly people'; their staple food was the pupae of a fly.
